Servo tank gauge measurement: Measuring Principle

A small displacer is accurately positioned in a liquid medium using a servo motor. The displacer is then suspended on a measuring wire which is wound onto a finely grooved drum housing. When the displacer is lowered and touches a liquid, the weight of the displacer is reduced by liquid buoyancy force. As a result, torque in the magnetic coupling changes, which is measured by 5 sets of Hall sensors.

Tank level measurement

Tank gauging is essential for the assessment of tank contents, tank inventory control and tank farm management. Portfolio of high-end radar and servo tank gauges help in accurate level gauging for refineries, tank terminals and petrochemical industries. The tank gauges are suitable for custody transfer as well as inventory control, and are designed to be used in SIL-3 loops to prevent overfill.

Radar Gauging:

Radar gauging portfolio is based on the SmartRadar FlexLine and is suitable for highly accurate level measurement on large bulk storage tanks. The FlexLine offers high flexibility that can be used for dedicated tank applications, such as independent overfill protection, floating roof monitoring, rim fire detection and roof immersion compensation, to mention a few. The FlexLine wireless option reduces the cost for wiring infrastructure and increases flexibility as various instruments can be added to the network without adding cables. The radar tank gauge is also certified for use in custody transfer applications.

Servo Gauging:

Introduced automatic servo tank gauges technology in the 1950s, and soon after introduced the first automatic level gauge for bulk liquid storage tanks. The current servo tank gauges technology includes the Advanced Tank Gauge (ATG) and the Xmitting Tank Gauge (XTG). The ATG and XTG series microprocessor-controlled servo tank gauges are compact and need only a 2-inch mounting flange. The servo tank gauges can easily be integrated with existing SmartRadar, hydrostatic or hybrid gauging installations.

High Accuracy Servo Tank Gauge

The High Accuracy Servo Tank Gauge is designed specifically for use in Custody Transfer and Inventory Management applications across the full range of modern storage tank designs. The servo tank gauge measures product level, water interface and product density profile in a single microprocessor based unit. Connecting the gauge to one of the range of MCS 3780 Series temperature probes, provides measurement of both product and vapour temperature.

Principle of Operation

The servo tank gauge measures liquid level based on the principle of liquid displacement. A displacer is suspended on a stainless steel wire payed out from a grooved drum housed in the gauge enclosure. A highly sensitive torque measurement devise continuously measures the effective weight of the displacer which, under steady state level conditions, is half immersed in the liquid. Should the level change, the displacer undergoes an apparent change of weight. The gauge microprocessor senses this change in weight and causes a servo motor to rotate the measuring drum until balance is restored.

Density is determined by measuring the effective weight of the displacer when completely immersed. Sample readings, recorded at configurable intervals as the displacer travels down through the liquid, provide density profiling.

Water interface level and tank base measurement are achieved by recording the point at which the gauge recognises the effective displacer weight in water and at the tank base respectively.

The Servo Tank Gauge Features and Key Benefits:
