How To Choose A Tank Gauge for LPG LNG

What Is a Tank Gauge for LPG LNG?

A Tank Guages or tank level indicator is a piece of equipment used to measure the internal contents remaining in a tank (be it Diesel, AdBlue®, Petrol or other fluid). It gives a visual guide to the owner or user showing the remaining contents of a tank either digitally or via an analogue clock face.

a Few Things To Remember

A few things need to be taken into account when choosing which tank gauge for LPG LNG is suitable for you:

  • How large is the tank you are going to use the gauge for? (The larger the tank the more accurate you want the gauge to be)
  • How much are you looking to spend?
  • Are you looking to have it powered by a battery, the mains, or not at all?

What Types are Avaliable?

Float/Cat Tank Gauges for LPG LNG

A Float/Cat & Mouse tank gauge for LPG LNG is the simplest form of measuring the internal contents of a tank. They generally mount directly into the top of a tank, with the float mechanism situated directly underneath. This type of gauge provides a simple indication of tank contents. They generally have an analogue screen and are a fairly simple, yet effective way of measuring fuel levels. This style of gauge gives an approximation of the tank contents. They are a relatively cheap option but they are not particularly accurate.

Why you need to use an automatic tank gauge?

Using an Automatic Tank Gauge has replaced manual dip-stick measuring as the preferred inventory control solution for retail fuel sites with underground fuel storage tanks. A single Automatic Tank Gauge panel/console can be connected to probes and electric line leak detectors across multiple tanks to manage an entire fuel site’s inventory. The tank probes accurately measure the amount and temperature of any fuel or water in a tank and report it back to the Automatic Tank Gauge .

There are four primary functions of an Automatic Tank Gauge:

  • Inventory control and measurement (Up to Custody Transfer levels)
  • Leak detection
  • Compliance tracking
  • Flow rate monitoring

Fuel site owners using an Automatic Tank Gauge are able to accurately assess the amount of fuel currently available for dispensing in each tank. By checking the inventory daily, an owner is able to understand their sites’ business cycles, how much inventory they need on hand, and when they need to schedule deliveries. Tight inventory control can help identify variances in fuel amounts that might be caused by inaccurate deliveries, malfunctioning equipment, or theft.

An Automatic Tank Gauge can perform the leak detection test by taking product level and temperature readings nearly continuously for a set period of time to determine if a changing product level may be due to a leak. Some Automatic Tank Gauges perform both Statistical and Continuous Statistical Leak Detection by taking inventory readings over the course of a set period whenever there is no pumping action. The system statistically analyses the data to determine if the tank is tight or leaking.

Compliance is an important aspect of running a gas station as a failed inspection may result in downtime or fines. An Automatic Tank Gauge system can help an owner detect leaks, test pump flow rates, and record inventory reconciliation. Installing an Automatic Tank Gauge system not only helps a station owner perform compliance tests, but it can also help maintain the documentation necessary to supply inspectors. Many tank gauges include a printer for creating physical documentation at set times.

Classification of Level Gauge

Several forms of level gauges exist in the industry. Depending upon the types of liquids such as water, oil, diesel etc. measured by level gauges, they can be classified into following categories:

Tank level gauges: These level sensing devices generally determine volume of liquid enclosed in the tank.

Fuel level gauges: These devices mainly provide fuel level readings in case of automobiles and other equipments consuming fuel.

Water level gauges: These level gauges are basically applied to determine the rise or fall occurring in water level.

Mechanical level gauges: This category of level gauges is mainly employed in underground storage tank applications for measuring the level of liquid.

Applications of the magnetic level gauges

The magnetic level indicator (MLI) or magnetic Level Gauges are used to measure levels of fluid using a floatable device that can float in both high and low density fluids. The magnetic Level Gauges were initially designed as an alternative to glass sight gauges but they are now being widely used in process industries, new constructions and plant expansions. The magnetic Level Gauges are often used in applications where the glass sight gauges are unsafe, environmentally risky or difficult to see.

Principles of operation of the magnetic Level Gauges

The magnetic Level Gauges use the principle of magnetic field coupling to provide information on fluid level, to activate a switch and to provide continuous level data. During measurement, the coupling allows the magnetic level gauge to measure without any direct contact between the indicator and the fluid in the vessel. The magnetic field consists of lines of flux surrounding the magnet and the magnet field acts on other objects with sufficient force to move the object.

In the MLI, the magnets within the float and the indicator are magnetically coupled to create a magnetic field which penetrates the chamber wall to couple with the magnetic field created by the magnets in the indicator flags that displays the levels. The float which is located inside the chamber tracks the surface of the liquid. Selecting the appropriate magnetic level gauge for a specific application depends on several factors that include the kind of process fluid, its specific gravity, operating temperature and pressure including the necessary level range.

The Advantages of the Magnetic Level Gauges over Glass Sight Gauges

The safety benefits of magnetic Level Gauges over the glass sight gauges

  • The most obvious advantage of the magnetic level gauge indicator is the reduced possibility of breakage even under extreme pressures or temperatures. The magnetic level gauge indicators are designed to accommodate severe environmental conditions up to 210 bars at 370oC.
  • The pressure boundary of the MLI is made of robust metal making it strong and safe as a vessel. The indicators, transmitters and switches are all mounted externally so that it is not affected by toxicity, corrosiveness or other characteristics of the fluid process.
  • Another safety benefit is chemical compatibility with the fluid which is restricted to 3 components: metallic chamber, gasket and float. The glass sight gauges have compatibility issues with wetted materials like glass, metal and sealants.
  • Level gauge are virtually maintenance-free once it is installed because the indicator never touches the process fluid. Sight glasses have to be periodically cleaned and checked for leaks. Very often scales and build-up on the glass from process fluids makes the sight glass unreadable.
  • In the magnetic Level Gauges, visibility is possible even from a far distance (100 feet) while the sight gauge level gauge indicators are only intended to be viewed from a distance of around 10 feet.
  • Installations of the level gauge are a lot easier and simpler. In many cases the sight glass gauges are only available in 12-inch length due to weakness of glass. If the required visible indication length is increased, additional sight gauges are required which increases the possibility of leak joints.
